If I was recommending to someone else, and as the only properly competitive Linux desktop OS out of the box, I recommend Mint. My mother has run it hassle free without realising it before.

As someone with a bit more experience with Linux, I prefer Gentoo for the adaptability. I always enjoyed the user experience of OpenSUSE, but I've constantly had driver issues for simple things like Wireless adapters and audio controllers.

CentOS or even Ubuntu for servers
