Hi all, wanted to tap on the wisdom of the community for solutions because I'm totally out of any ideas.

I have a problem similar to the original author of this post https://linustechtips.com/topic/1111998-pc-random-restarts/

So what happens is that the PC will automatically restart without any warning - like someone came over and pushed the reset button. Then it restarts smoothly and just resumes operation till the next restart happens again. It's super frustrating because I've tried everything that I can think of already:

1. Changed most of the components. Already changed everything other than the GPU and HDD. However these 2 components I took it out and tested - GPU stress tested (ran Heaven for a few hours) HDD ran HD Tune Pro. Other than these 2, every component has been replaced, even the power supply cable.

2. Initially I left the motherboard on the surface of the desk. After this restarting hell started, I installed standoffs and connected a thin insulated wire from the top right hand corner standoff to one of the mounting holes of the PSU to ground it. Also placed a cardboard underneath the motherboard so prevent any further static (my suspicion was that the spray paint conducts static electricity well)

3. Taped the "Reset" pins on the motherboard because I thought that maybe something was shorting the pins

So after all these were done, I thought something might have worked. But alas, the restarting still happens.

Is there anyone who can provide me with some insight? Or point out something that I might have overlooked or need to double check on?

The table is fully made of wood, hanging on metal bars at the sides, spray painted black.

The components are:

Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro Wi-Fi (BIOS ver F60c)
Processor: Ryzen 5 3600
Cooler: Ryzen Wraith Prism
GPU: Galax RTX 2060 Super Gamer
RAM: Kingston Hyper X Fury RGB 2 x 8 3600 MHz
SSD: Transcend MTE220S 256 GB NVMe
HDD: Toshiba 1 TB
PSU: Silverstone ET 650 W 80+ Gold + Custom Sleeved Cables

Any help is greatly appreciated!

check the power setting in windows for the drive. The default setting will be to shut off the drive while idle. if you set it to 0 then it wont turn off. also disable sleep and hibernate.

and running an SSD within 20% of its capacity slows it down considerably.

best bet is to try a 500GB or 1TB SSD

Hmmm I don't think it's this issue though. It's not going to sleep or hibernating. It's like a full on reset.

Not quite sure how the SSD running slow thing links to the reset too though. Pretty sure it isn't that

Temps? and there is a 60e version of the BIOS 60c is no longer.   Don't know if that would help or not , and has this always happened?

Temps are all normal. It could be while he's just browsing Youtube when the usage isn't high at all. I could update the BIOS no problem.

It happened when I first built the PC into the desk so initially I thought it would be a motherboard or PSU issue. So for good measure, I actually swapped out the motherboard, SSD, RAM, processor, cooler, and PSU the first time I went back. But it still happens.

After which I installed standoffs and laid a cardboard underneath the motherboard and also grounded the motherboard by connecting an insulated wire from the standoff next to the RAM slot all the way to 1 of the mounting holes on the power supply.

It still restarted after this so we tried to insulate and tape the "Reset" jumper pins on the motherboard. Then the resets started to happen less frequently for a few days and now suddenly it's full on coming back again.

😞

have you tried it without all of those extender cables?

I tried with a new set of extender cables and without extender cables on my previous visit. Still happens. I haven't tried without a GPU riser cable but the way the table is built requires me to use the riser cable. I myself am not sure if a riser cable could cause auto restarts or not

Your running out of possible culprits.  $1 it is the riser cables

Makes sense. I probably have been procrastinating on this the longest because I don't have 1 readily available for switching out. Will keep you updated. Probably going sometime next week

Guess I owe you $1. I went down swapped the card, the riser cable, a new motherboard, and a new HDD.

No more restarts!!!

The world is a peaceful and sane place again.

Thanks for all your replies!
