I am planning on moving my minecraft server out of my paid host to get rid of the monthly fee. I am wanting to build a home server to be able to run a few minecraft servers, and other vms as I want to test things. I have looked up popular host of minecraft servers and got an idea of what cpu they use but am not sure if its worth it to go xeon or just use a consumer grade cpu. I have no preference over amd vs intel but i would want 32gb+ of ram

I have entertained buying a rack as well so would also want it to be able to fit in a server chassis.

If you look around ebay you usually can get pretty good deals on decommissioned rackmount data center servers for pretty cheap. You just have to slap in your own drives but a lot of them come with RAID or HBA cards along with front hotswap bays.
