Hi, currently looking into upgrading my current pc to suit not just a gaming use but also a working one (mainly solidworks. Do use Adobe cloud apps but much less then solidworks).

In short:

Buget total: max 3500 euro

Current:

Pc: I57600k + 1070 + 2x8 3200

1st monitor: 27 inch 1440p 60hz

2nd: 37 inch 1080p 60hz tv

Considering upgrade to:

5900x + 3080 + x570 (aorus elite or crosshair hero) + 800w+ psu

+ add lg cx48/55 as monitor

Good idea? Yes/no?

Different suggestions?

LONG (with headers for skimming)

Budget:

I do have a decent amount of money available to do so but setting a specific budget is a bit complicated. Mostly depends on how much im willing to spend right now. Lets say its around 3500 euros as that would be pretty much the max I am able to. This is for the entire setup though But definetly not trying to aim for that number. (So even if a 3090 gor example would fit in the budget wouldnt be a good fit in this case. Id rather save that money then).

Current setup:

PC:

i5-7600k (4.6ghz oc)

Gigabyte 1070 windforce

Gigabyte ga-z270xp-sli

2x8gb 3200 corsair lpx

Asus ac56 (currently not in use, use ethernet)

Corsair 750d

Corsair 550w

Crucial p1 1tb nvme (c drive, productivity use mostly. + small games and max 2 largr games or so I play a lot at that moment)

Samsung 860 evo 500gb (completely Google drive dedicated. Stores most of my Google drive for quick access)

Seagate barracuda 1tb (games only)

Seagate barracuda 2tb (games + nvidea recordings/highlights)

Desk:

Samsung s27H350QFO

Samsung UE37EH5000

Razer ornata

G502 spectrum

Senheiser game one (connected through shitt hel)

My own plan:

(Definitely not set in stone, this is part what i am asking suggestions about)

First I want to upgrade the pc. As untill I do that most other changes wont work due to the gpu being good upto 1440p 60 max.

Pc:

cpu:

I want to make the pc so it will manage quite a long time to go. My plan for now to get an amd 5900x. This due to the high core count and relatively fast clock. I think it probably worth it over the lower end models due to the productivity work.

Gpu:

Then gpu 3080 (pref fe but not going to go to far out of my way) as soon as I can get hands on that for roughly msrp. This because I do want to use rtx, I prefer nvideas software and its superior solidworks performance to amd.

Motherboard:

This would require a motherboard upgrade. Not sure about this yet. But I mainly need rear USB ports (using all 7 right now). And enough sata ports in case I need more storage or want to setup raid. Mainly looked at the x570 aorus elite and x570 crosshair hero.

Psu:

Also would need to upgrade psu. Will likely go with whichever +800w psu is on sale at the time and is at least 80+ rated with black cables and modular.

Ram:

2x16gb 3600 ram would be nice but a good temporary cost saving would be using the current 2x8 I have rn.

Drive:

A new c drive would be nice. The p1 is good, but I do notice its getting quite a lot of use. Nowhere near an issue yet. And wouldnt be for a long time. But would be nice to get a high quality drive at some point. Again probably temporary cost saving to not get one. When I do will probably switch to using the p1 as dedicated Google drive local storage because of the data transfer speed it would give me between it and my c drive.

Desk:

For my desk I mostly want to upgrade my monitor setup. Right now my 27inch is definitely by far the best of the 2. But I find myself using the 37 inch a lot due to its larger size. I also often get into situations where I need to put program windows in 1/4 of the screen due to needing to many at the same time. A 3rd screen would be very helpful.

Want to get an LG cx48 or cx55 and mount this on my monitor arm. This would give me a very large screen to work with. The 55 being pretty much 4 27 inch screens. Its also 4k and 120hz. Which would make for great gaming and movie watch use (right now the 37 inch is also my movie tv).

It being oled doesnt concern me to much. I can easily dim light in my room allowing for lower brightness settings which should help a lot with longevity.

I want to then put my 27inch to the right of it flipped into portrait mode. Measuring it this should technically fit on the monitor arm (though exceeding the weight limit by about 2x but already doing so by 1.5x right now and seems to easily handle that) this way it would also fit width wise. Also a 27 inch in portrait is the same height as a 48 inch so that should work well. As for the 37 inch plan to mount that to an extention on the arm above the other 2.

With that setup I could pretty much make it do what ever I want. Should I need a smaller screen for a game I can always set a custom resolution and do it that way. And with more cinematic games it would only be an advantage. Productivity wise it would be great to to have a portrait screen to the side.

Rest should be fine. Only other thing I'm considering is either a different keyboard or a stream deck. As some dedicated macro keys would be nice.

At some point would also want vr. But this is the lowest priority as it would be gaming only. For this considering both quest 2 and index. Quest 2 as it would be a cheap way to get vr, index as I really like full body tracking and if you want to make a quest do that might aswell buy an index with the amount that costs to do.

End:

Thanks for reading! Know it was long. Tried to make the headers for easy skimming. I know the long reasonings make it seem like its hard to suggest anything else. But if you have anything else to suggest or think hey that is dumb. Just suggest it! As I said. Nothing is set in stone. Just my current plan. And if there is anything that comes up that is better would gladly change it (was considering an ultrawide instead at first for example. But considering my use case switched to the large screen instead)

Where abouts in europe are you in - just so I can put it into Pc part picker

Also, do you have a preference for air or water cooling for the CPU? And what is your opinion on RGB

Netherlands

Probably air due to the cost savings. A decent air-cooler will do close to what a good watercooler will anyway. Currently have a hyper 212 evo which would probably run a bit hot so might pick up something like a dark rock pro 4? I like the look of those kinds of aircoolers anyway. Aio definitely look nicer and especially the display ones are very cool and I could fit them in my case but they do cost quite a lot more for pretty much no better performance while having more chance of breaking. (Also noise is not really an issue for me i usually have a headset on anyway.)

Rgb imo is fine but definitely not something I'm going to look for. Like the crosshair board has some. Thats fine by me. But dont really see it as a plus or negative. Guess a tiny plus but not one id spend more then idk, 2% extra on or so?

What would be your ideal budget as you said 3500 euros is the maximum. Also would you be alright waiting for a bit as the pc market isn't the best with scalpers selling parts at crazy prices.

Budget is a little complicated. Sorry that its a little vague haha. Right now pretty much how it is. I dont earn any money but not losing any either due to corona. I have about 3500 max available i could spend without running out that available spending money. But ofcourse would be nice to keep a little buffer for various reasons. What I mean with that is spending it all is fine. But if its things like "oh this thing that is 50% more expensive and 10% faster still fits in the budget!" Then id rather save that money. But if it would make sense to get it anyway then would be fine.

Also means that postponing spending would be good to. Want to do that with ram for example. Want to go to 32gb 3600 but that would cost 150 euros while I still have 2 perfectly working 8gb sticks. Which will be slower but not all that much.

Also definitely ok with waiting. Im not in a huge hurry. But do want to upgrade. At this point though I want to go with 30** series or better though (in case ti for example would release before stock is back up) Which is probably the main bottleneck in this case. The 5900x seems to be somewhat easier to get (still hard to but easier then a 3080). For that that goes pretty much the same. Id rather wait for availability and a fair price then go with older hardware or inflated prices

Sorry I took a while to reply..

I would recommend this (once things are in stock at a reasonable price)

For the CPU, I agree. The 5900X seems like a good option for your use case and budget. And the Dark Rock 4 is a great cooler while not being too expensive.

As for the Motherboard, I have chosen the Asus X570-F as it is slightly better and has more features than the Aorus Elite, but not as expensive as the Crosshair Hero.

For the RAM, I listed 3200MHz as 3600MHz is 40 Euros more and will only improve performance a bit. It is up to you whether you are willing to pay that extra.

For the GPU, the 3080 is a good option. The Founders Edition will run slightly hotter and louder than AIB cards but if you like the looks of it and are not too concerned about noise, it should be fine.

And finally, the PSU. I chose this one as 750W is plenty for this build. To get a decent 850W one, it will cost an extra 30-50 euros which probably isn't worth it as the system I listed will barely pull 500W at max usage. However Nvidia's 30 Series cards are known to have short spikes of higher wattage but 750W will still be plenty.

If you think you would benefit from it, the CX48 is a great TV and if it will fit in your setup, is great for gaming and productivity and it seems like from your description, you would benefit.. However it is quite expensive. I am not aware of how much they cost in the Netherlands, but if it doesn't fit on top of that 1900 euro PC upgrade, You could definitely use your current RAM and upgrade to 32GB later.

Thanks for reading, I know it was quite long:0

One of the commenters suggested that load / store times would be improved using PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

No worries! Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I agree the crosshair is expensive. At like 2x the elite price. Reason I looked at those 2 is the elite is about the lowest id consider dropping down too. Crosshair being pretty much the highest. Main things id need are a minimum of 7 usb and your suggestion does have that so thats nice. Definitely worth looking at too. Unfortunately wouldnt give me any left over usb slots but to be fair if thats the only issue an expansion card is always an option. Will definitely consider motherboard as well.

Reason 3600 could be nice is that ryzen 5*** does like 3600mhz. I think for me it would be best to rather wait then get 3200 right now. If the extera money ended us being an issue. As in 90%of my current use time 16gb is fine. It would just allow me to mainly do more complicated stuff with productivity programs, and also letting me run more things at the same time.

For psu ill have a look, last time I checked 750w was cheaper then 850w ofcourse. Sumetimes can be lucky with sales. At least rather overestimate a little then under. 750w should be fine as nvidea does recommend it. But as I am using most of the rear io. And also several drives it could be that those together would be segnificant. Will need to figure that one out to make sure those power spikes aren't an issue.

My setup is currently on a fairly large desk and with an artic z2 (gen3) pro stand. Roughly measuring it out, it would technically fit if the 27inch is rotated 90degrees. But it would segnificantly go over the weight limit of that arm. Though I think it would actually support it anyway. I'm already going over as it is and clearly nowhere near its limit. Would require a vesa adapter which i checked and does exist for this size. Also over here they are about 1444 euros for the 48 inch and 1200 euros for the 55 inch (which is part of the reason for considering the larger one too as its cheaper and would still fit). This is without sales, I've seen both go on sales upto about 1100 euros.
