Take a careful look at page 15 of that manual, it shows the pin layout of the front-IO header. Note the way the pins are numbered: bottom row is odd, top row is even numbers! A full CMOS reset is also a good idea, then load the fail-safe profile. If that boots, try the optimal defaults profile.

This is not my first time building a computer by an means but this is my first time using a server board and im guessing something isnt plugged in properly.

Parts:

Board: tyan s7012

CPUs: x2 X5660

Case: cooler master masterbox nr600p

  • I know for a fact the drives are all compatible
  • I know the PSU is compatible and all the power connectors are plugged in properly
  • I have a green flashing light on mobo but absolutely no fans or drives spinning up
  • All ram slots are populated
  • Have already tried booting with x1 CPU only

I think MAYBE the front IO is different on this board from a typical ATX desktop board (again its my first time using a server board)
It just doesnt boot at all which is what makes me think the front IO isnt plugged in properly. i attached the manual for reference.

What am i doing wrong here?

When you say it won't boot do you mean will not actually power on? Like fans won't spin up etc?

First step would be to remove one of the CPUs and pair of ram and get the system going with a single CPU. A lot of the time server motherboard need specific ram slots populated in a certain way or it will not power on.

Firmware update may also be required, board was originally release for Xeon 5500, it has the newer 5520 chipset which do support Xeon 5600 and I personally have similar systems working fine (Intel boards with 5600 Xeons)

sorry its been a long day, i have already tried with a single CPU and forgot to mention all ram slots are populated. and yes i do mean no power on at all. i happen to know every part is currently working properly except the motherboard, which i recently acquired off ebay, as i was using the rest of the parts in an old HP proliant server i had upgraded. this is my first time messing with a server board though.

was out of town, but i did finally manage, with some confusion from the header wording, get it booting normally. Thank you!
