Google Gmail Problems Today

Today Google stated that a significant amount of users ran into errors with service this afternoon. Some couldn't access their inbox while others got error messages, high latency, and other unexpected behavior. The company wrote in a message on its service status page and later stated that the problems were solved at 6:51 E.T. Coincidentally the errors came a day after many Google properties were hit with an outage. What do you guys thing caused these problems?
