This is my first PC build so excuse me for lacking knowledge, but it will not fully POST. I am using a Ryzen 7 5800X with an ASUS Tuf x570. Do I need to update the BIOS on the board? If so, how do I do that? I do not have an older generation CPU to install in the system.

You need to update the bios. Look in your mobo manual to see if it supports bios update via USB. If it doesn't, AMD has a loaner program where they will send you an old CPU so you can perform the update. Places like micro center will also perform the update for you (using an older cpu) for a small fee.

As @parrotperilsaid, your motherboard does indeed support USB flashing (page 51 of your motherboard manual). Follow the instructions for updating your BIOS and report back.

I can't tell if it is possible to do this without an older gen CPU. I cannot enter the BIOS even though the screen appears on startup.

do you have any error lights lit up on the board?

try holding down the "delete key" as you turn the computer on and keep holding it.

remove battery and reinstall, try again

all failed, worth a try, you probably need to get an older chip to update the bios.  Kinda dumb, I have a 1200 sitting in a drawer, probably does not help much either.

Look up instructions for how to USB flash your specific motherboard. You do not need to enter BIOS to update the BIOS.

I think I misunderstood the indicator lights at first, I now realize that I have an error light for the DRAM. I have tried removing and replacing my RAM, and it appears to be seated properly.

Well still check the side of the box to see what BIOS revision it has where the S/N is and see if it supports Ryzen 5000 series as BIOSs can act weird.
