I got Dxtory yesterday after using FRAPS for a long time. I got it all setup and I am using the lagarith lossless codec but I am still getting a 50% FPS loss. I have a 5400RPM recording HDD which I think might be the problem. If any one has any suggestions to help fix this I would greatly appreciate it. here are my specs MoBo. ASrock 970 extreme 3

CPU. AMD Phenom II x4 960t

GPU. EVGA 560ti 2gb

RAM. 8gb GSkill ripjaws

PSU. Corsair enthusiast TX750

Your CPU is way too slow for recording, as well as your hard drive.

You will get a large FPS drop with whatever recording software you use.

If you want the least amount of FPS drop you should consider getting the

, a HDMI capture card with a build-in h264 encoding processor. This card will allow you to record at up to 1080p at a much better quality than Youtube HD, though not as good as FRAPS.

The down side is that it's a bit expensive, ~$220.

if you want to use a software based solution, you're going to have to record at 720p to a second drive using a codec that's not very CPU demanding.

The cheapest solution might be using MSI Afterburner, which has a free screen recorder included. And you don't need a MSI based motherboard or graphics card to use it. Recording at 720p or lower might give you a low enough FPS loss.

If you are not running 2 internal hardrives, do so now.

Your primary harddisk cannot bare load to reading the game data from the drive AND writing the video to the drive at the same time, something has to give, which ends up being the read partially giving you lower FPS. The solution is to run the OS and game off one drive and record to the other, you will instantly see an improvement.

Secondly, you CPU along with playing the game has to encode the video stream at your output resolution, so the better the CPU (more cores) the better. So ideally try getting your hands on a better CPU.

You can also go for DragonSteve's suggestion with the Avermedia Live Gamer HD as it's onboard chip removes 90% of the work away from your CPU. BUT, you still need that second drive for recording, that is a must. Just don't run that game from the same drive you wish to record to. :)

It'd be ideal to have 3 separate drives altogether, correct? One for the OS, 2nd for games, and the 3rd for recording. I know that the guys with more money jusy have another PC entirely for recording/streaming.

Yes, that would be the ideal setup. SSD for OS, Games on HDD1, recording on HDD2. :)

I would recommend using Mirillis Action because you can encode on the GPU which reduces stress on the CPU

I am using two HDDs, the 5400rpm one is a torn a part external one. I am considering upgrading my rig to Intel later in the year. Thanks for the replies.

I think its time for a upgrade

or just don't bother streaming/recording
