Hi everyone. I'm looking to upgrade the networking setup in my garage (it's used as a workshop) from the mess that I currently have. I'd like to get a network switch in place, but I have a problem. Currently I can't think of any feasible way to get a wired connection to the garage without running a cable down the stairs. That definitely works, but it's not ideal, and I can't keep using it like it is. I know about Powerline adapters and I own a few myself, however they don't work too well. Are there any inexpensive ways of getting a network connection out to the garage? Wi-Fi works, but it's too slow for the things I need to do. I'm thinking of getting a nice router and using it as a wireless bridge positioned in the best way possible in the garage for a good signal. Any recommendations for doing this?

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

I think your best bet is to run a cable, it's unlikely that a bridged router will be any better because it still has the same poor reception. the Ethernet cable would also be cheaper.

The entire point of my post was to find a solution other than a cable. I have no way to run a cable due to the construction of my house. It can be done, but it wouldn't be very easy. I'm thinking something using Wi-Fi could be alright if the range is sufficient. I'm using an old AirPort Express right now, and it works alright, but isn't the fastest.

what kind of speed do you need? can you run cable through the duct work? your best bet is probably a 2.4ghz wifi system then and get it as close as you can

Speed is important to me. No, I can't run anything through any ductwork - the garage isn't served by a vent. I'll look into a Wi-Fi based solution.

is the garage separate or connected? If its separate you could use a directional antenna for both ends. you could do it even if the  garage is connected, but pending on what your going through I don't know how much it would change
