That sort of thing is expected with any synthetic, but it should take dozens of years. How old is that thing?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

5-6 years Seems like a pretty short time.  It’s not impossible if substandard material was used, or there was some sort of chemical reaction going on.  Plastic has elastomers in it that can get baked out or simply evaporate over time.  They sell plastic “conditioner” that is more or less elastomers and solvent to put the elastomers back in the plastic.  Sounds like that stuff needs it.
