If you are set on pcie usb, I'd simply do a search on ebay (or your Chinese website of choice) and buy the cheapest one I can find.

Reviews are normally not very helpful for this sort of stuff & unless you are after a particular chip/controller, I'd just buy an inexpensive one.

I can't say I am sensitive to any lag with USB hubs if there is some lag. These are easy to carry between computers. Some (unpowered) hubs I have used:

https://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F4U042/

* First one (Ugreen) works as an ethernet adapter for Nintendo Switch too (very few do), but these can also be found on ebay from no-name brands.

* Second one (Belkin) is just a regular hub. Both are only USB 2.0, not 3.0, because I am still OK with that.

Both are quite expensive compared to some cheaper ebay jobs, unless you get them on sale. They work fine unless you want to connect a device with too much power draw, such as some hard drives. If there is lag, I am not sensitive to it. But I am not a serious gamer or whatever, if that's where you are coming from. Anyway, good luck.
