I'm currently trying to fix my neighbor's laptop. Something wrong with the OS and needs reinstalling. I tried to moved the files by plugging it in my external hdd enclosure. I plugged it in to my windows laptop and it's was unreadable. Then I tried using Ubuntu and it was able to read the drive.

But when I tried to move the data from the faulty drive to the Ubuntu drive. The transfer speed was so slow. It's been running about a couple of hours now and it's only managed to move a couple of folders and about a gig of data.

It's this normal to be this slow or am I doing something wrong???

Please need advice.

I think the harddrive you're trying to copy from is dying.

You'll have to hope you get it all.

Yea what I was worried about. Even linux took some time to read the content of the drive and when I tried opening one the the files a .png file. It took some time to open and it can't even showed the preview or the thumbnail thing.

I need to talk with my neighbor. She dropped it off when I'm not home.

I don't it's even worth it anymore. I mean the laptop itself it's a old Axioo netbook with 1gb of ram.

it's probably that slow because the drive is dying.

Yea probably. I'm only getting about 220-250 kB/s

well that drive is dying if you want the data on it you should limit copy speed else it can die while copying

I'm literally doing it one folder at a time. Avoiding some unnecessary files like video and music

Yea I think I'm gonna need to talk about that with my neighbor tomorrow. I'm burned out today with online lectures and assignments.

TBH I don't think it's worth fixing anymore IMO. I mean the laptop is Axioo netbook with an Atom cpu (1C/2T) and 1 gb of ram.
