So quick question from a server n00b,

I've come across what seems to be a brand new NetApp X670a 15.3tb 12G sas ssd.

It came in with a bunch of stuff that had servers etc. It's still in the plastic outer packaging and was just labelled as a new spare. It's the wrong caddy etc to fit in anything I have to test it. (has a circuit board connected to the back with another sas connector on it making it a rather long caddy/drive)

Had a quick look online and it seemed though they are only compatible with certain servers?

Not sure. So how do I test it? Can I use it in a standard server? Should I just sell it? (they seem to be very very expensive)

Any insights would be appreciated.

Sell it. A 15tb SAS drive is going to bring more money than headache in trying to make it work with what you have.

There's a reason enterprise stuff gets so expensive.  Vendors like to tweak their product so you can't take a drive from a system x and put it in a netapp. Drive firmware, funky adapter boards slight power requirement variations for different drives with different backplane boards.

I wanted to add 6TB to my main system x SAN and my remote SAN.  So we got a quote for 18x 1.9TB drives. That was close enough to 6TB in both locations. Total cost. $35K because you have to use their drives with their firmware.
