VM inside OMV 5 Help

Hi guys,

 

Can anyone help me get a VM up and running inside OpenMediaVault 5.5.16-1

 

I've been watching the Techno Dad Life YouTube vids to get me this far but a lot of his vids refer to OMV ver 4.x and the VirtualBox plugin isn't available on ver 5.

 

Other vids refer to using Cockpit but as newb, I'm pretty lost.

 

I have tried creating a VM with Cockpit from a Ubuntu ISO but as soon as I click 'Create' I get the following error:

 

ERROR Network not found: no network with matching name 'default' Domain installation does not appear to have been successful. If it was, you can restart your domain by running: virsh --connect qemu:///system start Ubuntu otherwise, please restart your installation.

 

I have also tried installing VirtualBox from the terminal but I didn't get far with that either.

 

My last resort was to try and remote desktop into OMV and see if I could get Vbox running with a GUI..... Fail! While I did manage to get to a desktop it whinged about not being able to connect to a display.

 

As a side-note, I am trying to get lancache and pi-hole running on the same box and quickly realised this wasn't possible with out-of-the-box settings but I did manage to do this before by running lancache on the host and pi-hole on a guest and pointing the UPSTREAM_DNS to the pi-hole VM IP.

 

Any ideas?

Id really suggest just running a hypervisor like proxmox here, makes running vms much easier.

 

If you just want to connect to kvm on the host, you can use virt-machine-manager to connect to it from a remote system.

Thanks for the tip however, would you know what's going wrong with OMV?

 

I only need a single VM up and running and it doesn't even need to be Ubuntu, Raspbian would do the trick so VM management isn't really a high priority.

since you just want lancache and pi hole, you can just install docker on the omv system and run it from there, don't even need a vm.

 

OMV isn't made for vms, so thats explains the issues your having here, 

 

how are you remoting in? Is there x running on the system?

I recall trying the pi-hole in a container a while ago and it spat the dummy. I'll try again and report the error but if i recall, it was something to do with the ports. Lancache / Sniproxy used port 80 and 443 so I think there was a conflict.

 

With regards to remoting in, I followed a vid to install Mate desktop and then used the Windows remote desktop tool. It appeared to work but when I tried to run VirtualBox from the GUI it errored out. I cant remember what the exact error message was but it looked like a display issue.

 

I'll give pi-hole in docker another bash and see what happens.
