My computing needs have changed over the past few years from gaming to photo editing.

I was looking for suggestions as to whether or not I should update my current rig or keep it.

I am editing photos on two 4k monitors.

My current specs:

Intel i7 7700k processor

16GB DDR4 RAM. (I Don't know the speed off the top of my head.)

GTX 1070 graphics card (8gb)

Thanks in advance!

assuming you're using photoshop

according to puget systems, a 5800x would be the optimal upgrade: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Adobe-Photoshop-AMD-Ryzen-5000-Series-CPU-performance-1956/

going off of their many previous articles, a 7700k = 2700x, which are ~12% slower than a 3600x, which is a tiny bit slower than a 3600xt, which is over 30% slower than a 5800x which basically tops their list. so 40-50% performance uplift if you go from a 7700k to a 5800x. but thats quite expensive, and you'd likely wanna get new ddr4 sticks that run at 3600-4000mhz. the gpu would be fine to carry over for photo editing workloads. an idea of what an ideal upgrade would cost:

PCPartPicker Part List
Type Item Price
CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor $449.00
Motherboard MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $106.99 @ Amazon
Memory Crucial Ballistix 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory $149.99 @ B&H
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
  Total $705.98

crucial ballistix e die has the best chances of getting you high clockspeeds without breaking the bank, 3800-4000mhz overclocks are common with these chips which would be perfect for a 5800x. you'd also be able to utilize a pcie 4.0 drive with this mobo, which may help with transferring raw photos or whatever. very expensive upgrade though, if your current system is fine then i'd avoid spending that kinda money needlessly lol

topics i need help on:
