MIPS Programming Question

I need to create a program in MIPS that tests if 2y^2 is consecutive to x^2. For example x = 3 and y = 2 produces 8 and 9 which are consecutive. I have never written anything in assembly or MIPS to be exact before so I have no idea where to start. I'm using MARS as my IDE and that's about as far as I have gotten. Any info would be useful, thanks

Just keeping this here as a From some short videos I watched jumping seems to be how data gets moved around from loops? I might be wrong on that. Aside from that the rest I am familiar with. Maybe not so much subroutines yet too. I'm not sure where to even start though. Normally you would create a class, instantiate variables, and so on. Also would any amount of SPIM code work in MIPS? Not really, no. Conditional branching is what what allows the processor to go to different instruction memory locations based on the current state of a given register. You can create loops this way by branching to a memory location before the branch instruction (so the branch instruction keeps being executed, hopefully until a condition is met).

Wow MIPS32, I really love to remember my university times. I'm about to cry a bit. I used PcSpim and QtSpim, I think QtSpim is easier to understand... Never tried MARS.

 

But: 2y^2 is equal to 2(y*y) which are four instructions set, mul, get result from register, mul and get result from register. And x^2 is x*x mul and get result from register, then compare if n2 - 1 is equal to n1, which are two instructions, addi n3, n2, 0b1111 (if I remember correctly we are working with two's complement representation) then beq n3 n1 jumpto... or similar. Did I understand well?
