Hi everyone!

So I have been using windows since before I could read. but I love my android phone to death, so thinking of trying linux. I'm going to have a partition of Maverick soon because of video work. Figured i should try some distro as well. is there any point in going for a linux distro? or is more of just something fun to try. I guess is there any practical reason to switch?

Im currently on win 8.1. dont need anything lightweight. rather it look good. any recommendations?

I would stick with 8.1 but if you really want a good look/feel i would look into either Ubunu or Linux mint (my two personal favorite)

P.S i am using Ubuntu right now  :)

I've been using Linux pretty much exclusively as my daily driver

for the past seven years or so, and have found it much more to my

liking than Windows.

However, while under most circumstances you can get by very well

with Linux, there are instances where you can be left hanging a

bit. Adobe Suite stuff doesn't exist for Linux AFAIK, and I have

recently been forced to go Windows because I needed Cuda because

the proprietary Nvidia Linux driver was just not working for me

(it exists and works in theory, but I failed utterly in getting

it to cooperate).

It depends on what you need your machine to do. For most tasks,

Linux fits the bill very nicely, but there are exceptions, at least

for the foreseeable future. I use it for almost everything except

the Cuda stuff and am very happy. :)

Its worth taking a look, my advice is set it up in a virtual machine first. This will save you partitioning things only to have to put it all back again because you don't like it. Also with Linux there are lots of distro's so choice is very much a thing, you will try a lot of distro's before you hit on one you like.

For my biased opinion give a debian based distro a go there is a lot of support for it. but as @alpenwasser said see if it supports the things you want it to do. For instance I only have it on my home server box but not my main pc as I game and the support is still not there.

Linux is absolutely nothing like Android, Linux is very programmer friendly for a reason, if you want simplicity and ease of use like you are used to, stay on W8.1, otherwise try Linux, but learn how to use it first, otherwise you will most likely hate it.

Yes, an excellent suggestion. It's actually what I've done on my Windows

machine, that way I can still use Linux as the main interface to the machine.

thank you everyone. Ill set up a virtual Machine and try out some distros. so try debian, mint, and  Ubuntu?

They're all pretty easy to install, and each have their advantages and

drawbacks. Out of the three I would probably go for Mint, but in the

end, as long as you're trying out stuff anyway, you might as well try

all three if you have the time and patience to do so. ;)

I use Ubuntu 12.04 and have done so for the last 2 years. Don't try it in a VM. It's much more fun in dual booting and you get the full experience.
