Laptops don't generally have WAN ports, only modem.

 

What you're looking at is likely a normal ethernet port, if it was indeed a WAN port then you would only be able to connect it directly to the phone cable that a modem would usually be connected to.

 

If I'm not mistaken the two are not physically compatible.

Can I use thunder bolt for ethernet? or can I buy an adapter?

Can you show us the port. Wan is a function not a type of port. It's likely that the port is RJ45 ethernet. What is the model of laptop and what exactly are you trying to do?

That's a regular Ethernet port, you just need to open it up completely to be able to plug the cable in. Laptops nowadays have these collapsing port designs.
