Upgrading GPU Help

Currently running on an i5-6600k, with a 1050ti. I mostly game on 1080p, but wanna be able to have better frame rates and run with higher texture quality, etc. Also looking for the opportunity to go more into 4k as well, but that's all dependent on price really. My motherboard is a MSI H110M Pro-VH Plus, no clue if that's a poor motherboard or anything, it's just what I got with this Amazon pre-build I got. 

So, if y'all could help me out with some ideas and maybe some of your experiences, that'd help a lot.

What game(s) are you playing, that you want more FPS, and higher texture quality in?

 

Do you know what make + model of the power supply is?

The i5-6600K is still a decent CPU, but lack of extra cores, and no Hyper-threading will hold your FPS back.

That and unable to overclock a K-sku CPU, on a non-overclocking H110 chipset based motherboard.

 

As you move up in resolution (e.g. 4K), the GPU runt / power becomes more dominate, even more so if you want HIGH resolution, and HIGH graphics settings.

For 1080p and 1440p, I think the RTX 2070 Super / RTX 2080 Super / RTX 2080 Ti would be ideal.

Given non-existent stock of RTX 3080 and 3090 right now...

RTX 3070 would be a good option as well, but might suffer the same fate as the RTX 3080 / 3090 once available.

 

AMD 5700 or 5700 XT would also be good options.

RTX 2070 Super performance at ~ RTX 2060 Super price.

 

Then again... if you can wait until after November 5th, recommendations may change, based on how AMD's RDNA2 GPUs do.

it means your locked away from overclocking, unable to take advantage of the K CPU's most significant advantage over the non K model

If you're gonna go that far, replace the whole system because the CPU, GPU, mobo and PSU will have to go, likely RAM and cooler as well. $1500 for all of that roughly

 

On the cheaper side of things, you can get away with just replacing the graphics card (say a GTX 1660 Super) and maybe the power supply, depending on what model it is. Slow memory and unremarkable CPU performance (both frequency and core count) will not let you take advantage of high refresh rate monitors well, so only esports games for say 80fps+ no matter how fast the GPU is.

Right now, I'm playing games like No Man's Sky and Resident Evil 2 Remake, but i want the option of playing more y'know maybe the likes of the new Doom or something along those lines.

The PSU looks like a Cooler Master 500w, which I don't know if that's good just now or anything. 

Again, I'm very new to pcs.

But, thanks for the help anyway. I'll consider these options and how much i'm willing to spend.

Awww, I didn't realise that was the case with my motherboard, thanks for that. 

Yeah, i'm not entirely confident with building a whole pc as of yet, but i'll look into it.

Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are actually pretty well optimized games.

GTX 1050 Ti can actually still play at stable 50 ~ 60 FPS...of course with settings turned down.

 

Even if you grab something like a RTX 2060 Super / RTX 2070 Super / Radeon 5700 / 5700 XT, Doom will not be a problem.

You can easily max the game out, 200+ FPS ... assuming the i5-6600K is not holding the GPU back much.

 

 

You need to find out what the PSU specifications are...at least the model of the "500W Cooler Master" PSU.

For your current set-up, it should be fine, because the GTX 1050 Ti is pretty lower power.

Same with a i5-6600K at stock, with no overclocking.

 

Power consumption will go up pretty significantly with a graphics card upgrade.

CPU + GPU basically takes account of 75%+ of overall system power draw.

 

If the Cooler Master 500W PSU is decent quality, you may be able to keep it, otherwise, you'll need to upgrade with the graphics card upgrade.

I'd recommend that you swap the PSU too if you decide to get a higher-end / higher power draw PSU.

 

Think of it this way, though:

You can always transplant the graphics card + PSU into your new system...if you decide to upgrade from the i5-6600K + H110 motherboard.
