Hello LTT Forums,

It has been a while but I could surely use the benefit of your collected experience once again.

 

I have a 4ish year old desktop (Asus z170S Sabertooth, i7 6700k) that I am trying to age gracefully and even into a workhorse.

 

I am not willing to buy a new MB or CPU at this time but I would like to up my RAM to 64 GB. However, due to a desire to save a buck whenever possible I am curious about mixing RAM. I was told never to do it if you can avoid it, and heeded this. Unfortunately this means I have no experience to draw on with it and I am coming to you folks for a stupid check and help.

 

My Asus Sabertooth Z170S has a i7 6700k and tech specs that say:

My original 32 GB of memory (Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 2400 MHz DDR4 DRAM Desktop Gaming Memory Kit 32GB (16GBx2) CL16 BLS2K16G4D240FSC) says this:

I bought 64 gigs of the new stuff just in case.

 

Can I get away with mixing the two, and send half back to save $100 and less ewaste? I have it drilled into my head mixing ram can/will make things unstable (maybe this is a holdover from the 90’s or 00’s and things have changed) is that a real possibility?

No problem at all running mix and match. If you are planning to overclock the pants off it then you will be running into stability issues but there's nothing wrong with running mixed companies. 

If I believe the sites the companies are even using the same memory chips and just put their own name and xmp profile on them. 

The best gaming PC is the PC you like to game on, how you like to game on it

You picked the same speed and latency RAM. Chances are very very good that it's going to work just fine.
