So I've recently been in need of a NAS server for my video editing work, and would like to build it to transcode video as well, I know very little about server building and start up. I've done a bit of research on drives and such but I'm basically wondering if there's anything I should know starting off or any hardware suggestions, looking to spend around 450-500 excluding storage drives.

Thank you in advance!

Depends on what software you would like to run.

For that budget, you can start with a 4 core cpu + 8gb ram + a cheap Nvidia gpu.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w
