iPad to MacBook using Thunderbolt 3 cable?

Hey all not sure if this is the right place to post this, can I use a Thunderbolt 3 6ft cable to charge / transfer data between the 2 devices? Or does it have to be a apple / generic USB-C cable?

 

iPad pro -> ThunderBolt 3 cable -> MacBook Pro 2016

Any cable should work, be it generic usb-c or an apple branded thunderbolt 3. However sometimes direct transfer of data might not work depending on the app and whether apple allows it.

Just try it and post your results here, can confirm that at least you won't be damaging the devices.

edit: thought I should mention that thunderbolt 3 also works as usb-c, lowest common denominator type of thing.
