Losing 40+ FPS while streaming with GPU encoding

Ryzen 3 3100, RX 580 DDR4 CL15 2 x 8GB 3133mhz

I’m using stream labs OBS and when I stream I go from a consistent 165 FPS to 120 or even lower sometimes, it’s completely unplayable. I have the stream set to 720p 60FPS with GPU encoding on and it even registers it as a GPU load in task manager. My CPU is not maxed out and I still have 4 or so gigs of ram left. I just have streamlabs, discord and VLC (for the stream playlist) open.

Help! I would like to be able to still play at a competitive level while streaming but if I can’t sort this then I’ll just have to cut back on how much I stream.

Forgot to mention that because my CPU is good for gaming and that’s about it I can only use GPU encoding unless I’m going to cap my frame rate to 60FPS or lower.

Run OBS as administrator.. there is a windows scheduler bug that wont allow proper GPU resources if usage is above 85%.

also Game Mode has to be enabled in W10 for the Admin trick to work properly

Thanks, I turned it off because people told me to.

Hopefully I can actually stream now.

Completely unplayable at 120fps? 😂

Yeah haha, I used to be 60hz and would literally kill for a consistent frame rate and now I’m 165hz and 120FPS looks like 30 after a consistent 165hz experience.

Oh, that's why.  Your monitor is an uneven number.  You can't get consistent frame times with a 165hz refresh rate. Unless you constantly hit 165fps, the frame rate is going to be unstable.

If you can't solve this, set your refresh rate to 120hz.  I guarantee you that after some initial discomfort, it will feel smoother.

That makes literally no sense, monitor companies ship 165hz monitors.
Even numbers don’t matter because my monitor is freesync and I don’t think they matter either way.

Oh, if FreeSync is enabled then just cap your frame rate with RivaTunerStatistics.

People don't understand that the bigger number isn't necessarily better. Frame times isn't something that most tech channels even talked about until recently. I'd suggest you monitor your frame time Afterburner's overlay. Here's how to set it up:
