I'm conflicted...

Right now I have my Hyper TX3 on my Sempron (with the other core unlocked). I still have the little one that it came with. But, here's the thing. The TX3 takes up a ton of room in my case, and it's mounted loose (it's using the clip that came with the stock heatsink). Even though it keeps things really cool, I was considering throwing the stock one back on, since I almost killed my CPU moving the case. And at full tilit, the stock heatsink is still quieter.

 

Is it worth it?

If it is going to be a problem, and almost kill your cpu, then I would just take it off. Not worth losing it IMO.

But what I'm worried about is the heat. Granted, the little heatsink will probably have a great transfer rate since it's so damn tiny, but I think it's only rated for 45 watts, and I'll be dumping nearly twice that.

 

I might get a stock 83xx heatsink off eBay. Do you know how loud those are at about 1/9th full tilt?

I see your point. I would think that the 8350 heatsink would be your best bet right now. As for sound, I don't know off the top of my head, but I would go to youtube and see how crazy it is.

Nice thing is that (if my stock heatsink is any indication) it will only run around 1000 RPM.

No. I have my CPU fan set to run around 1/9th the maximum it can.

That video isn't the best, but I can probably use my Sempron fan on it (just swap them out).

Jiggle it, even. And it's on a wobbly desk, that jiggles a lot.

You have a lot of options actually. Spit up like $35 for a decent case, buy a new and more compact aftermarket cooler, use the old stock one (not recommended) or be extra cautious. Maybe put the case on a separate desk or even the floor (dare I say it..)

I wish I would have put on my TX3 sooner so I could have RMA'd it. The clip it came with was bent like crazy, and bent the motherboard a ton. I noticed this a few days after the last RMA'able day. And I'm trying to save up to get a completely new rig.

ZEUS is toast. Besides, I took an LGA 775 P4 up to 5GHz. Pretty fun (I used water on it).

 

On a side note, just did a Prime95 run to see how hot it would get (worst case scenario) and with my target temp at 45C, it hit about 50C max then leveled out at 48/49 with the fan going as fast as it can. I think the fan got too cold last night though (left it outside in the car. Keep in mind I'm in Michigan) and now it has a kinda grunty whine. And I did this with the only airflow being my power supply right above it.

 

EDIT: When I'm folding it will probably just stay in the basement at my grandma's, with an 18C or so ambient, so the temps will be lower. Right now I'm at my dad's and it's probably almost 22C in my room.

Little update: I've been folding for awhile, and it's keeping pretty cool at 1500RPM. I'll still get an 83xx heatsink and fan, since my fan is a little loud.
