So I swapped gpus out from ati to a gtx 770, ran ddu, put on new drivers, bam everything working. Few games running fine, normal workload fine.

So start steam and try some more demanding games right?

no

Steam comes up to the login screen, give it about two seconds, UI freezes and then screen goes black. Computer restarts.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

I can get it to work fine if I disable the gpu in device manager, launch steam, and re-enable. But this isnt the best workaround because if steam goes for an update it's cactus again.

Try list:

last months driver

even older driver

seriously, like 1 year old driver

clear OC, default bios settings

reinstall steam

throw things

try "sfc /scannow" in cmd. might need to try a fresh windows 10. it sounds like a software issue, but not sure.

Reports no issues

I'd rather fix the OS I have than spend a week noting down every random program I've installed or configured over the past years for a fresh install

Try disabling hardware acceleration. There's 3 related settings to it under Settings<Interface, starting from "enable gpu accelerated rendering in web views" and going down.

Ahh, this seemed like it would be it, but hasn't done it. I ran with that idea though, went to Nvidia control panel and turned off every 3d setting o could for steam programs. Still didn't do it.

Tomorrow I'll try popping in a random video card for the sole purpose of using it for 3d rendering for steam. Maybe that will give a different result?
