Budget (including currency): 1000$

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Pretty much any fps game

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

My current pc build is starting to feel a bit dated. My RAM and VRAM are struggling to keep up, I'm running out of HDD and SSD space, and my CPU sometimes is at an extremely high usage in games. I'm feeling ready to upgrade especially since I just got a new job and have a bit of extra money. I play mostly FPS games. I've recently been playing lots of Borderlands 3 and Microsoft flight sim 2020. I'd really like a better computer so I can run those better. They are both on the lowest settings with decent fps, but there's quite a bit of stutter going on.

Here's my current build:

  • CPU
    i5 7600k
  • Motherboard
    Gigabyte Z270 HD-3 Ultra Durable
  • RAM
    Ballistix DDR4 8gb
  • GPU
    Nvidia Geforce GTX-1060 3gb VRAM
  • Case
    Thermaltake T22
  • Storage
    Sandisk 240gb SSD+WD Blue 1TB HDD
  • PSU
    500w Coolermaster Bronze Certified
  • Display(s)
    Acer G237HL 1080p 60Hz
  • Mouse
    Logitech G302
    • Operating System
      Windows 10 Pro

After seeing the new RTX 3070 and 3080 reveal I'd really like to buy the 3070. That is going to be some crazy value for money. Not sure if I want to go that route or try to squeeze a bit more out of my current build with a few upgrades. With the 3070, I'll likely end up getting an entire new system right?. I am not really sure how good my CPU is compared to the newer generations of intel processors. Do I just need an overclock or will I need an upgrade? I'd obviously need another at least 8 gigs of RAM, and for my GPU I'd probably get something like a 1670 if I don't go with the 3070.

What are ya'lls opinions? How should I go about this next upgrade?

Well that pretty much makes it a whole new system if I go the 3070. I would need a new CPU, new PSU, and new MOBO (if I went with comet lake or AMD). It wouldn't make much sense to stick with LGA 1151 because its already out of date.

I could also go a more budget route I suppose and get a 1660 Super, and maybe keep my CPU. Would I still get bottleneck that way? Is the 7600k still a decent processor that can run games at high settings?
