Task Manager Open Increases FPS

Hey everyone!

 

Got an issue here, that while it's not exaclty causing a problem, I'd feel happier if I could work out why it was happening.

So, with all games, if I have Task Manager open (even minimized) I get a large boost in fps.

 

Off the top of my head, it's difference between 80fps in Apex Legends without it open and 170fps with it open.

These results are repeatable in every game.

 

Having had the issue for awhile, I've only been able to come up with two reasonable answers:

One - A miner or other such malware using resources, which hides itself when Task Manager is open. I really don't beleive this is the case, as I have re-installed Windows several times, and changed GPU since first finding the problem.

Two - Having Task Manager open is increasing the system timer precision, which is in turn giving me better performance. I have attempted to confirm this using ISLC to set my timer resolution to 0.5ms, but this didn't have the same effect.

 

If anyone has any ideas on how to verify the second possible reason, I'd love to hear it.

I'd really like to be able to replicate my full performance without having Task Manager open.

I'm worried that one day I'll open Task Manager and it won't work, and as I don't know why it's doing it - I won't really have anywhere to turn.

 

Also, if anyone has any other ideas of what it might be, fire away.

Just from reading the title I surely think you have a bitcoin miner. Miners generally suspend if taskmgr.exe is running.

 

I tried to do the same thing to see if I get a performance boost on a fresh install - nope. It's a software issue.

Can you try using something like Process Hacker 2 to see your usage?

As I mentioned in the post, I've reinstalled Windows multiple times since I initially found the problem.

Do you believe it's possible for a miner to remain in the OS even after this? I wouldn't imagine so myself, but I can't say I've ever dealt with one before.

I closed Task Manager and ran Process Hacker just to double check, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary.

Hey i know why, you have a bitcoin mining virus. Someone else is using your pc to mine bitcoins for them. It slows down your pc and when you turn on task manager they try to hide the app from you by shutting it down causing a performance boost. USE malwarebytes to remove it!!! It worked for me!!!

remove the virus or reinstall windows.
