I am currently attending college and need a lot of portability so I run a 2020 MacBook Pro Bootcamp Windows 10 with an eGPU and have had a great gaming experience including VR and triple A games running at around 60 fps at a minimum but of course I am always looking for that little bit extra performance. I am one of the poor saps who purchased a pre built water-cooled RTX 2080ti eGPU just a few months ago, expecting the next generation nvidia cards to be way out of my price range but to my surprise, and I'm sure everyone else's, the 30 series cards are incredibly cheap! I'm looking at what it would take to upgrade my eGPU but mine is very compact and I would have to invest in a few extra pieces of hardware outside of the graphics card itself. If I were to upgrade to the RTX 3080 would I even see the major increase in performance even though I am limited to 4 PCIE express lanes with the Thunderbolt 3 connection? Does anyone have any tips or insight on what I should watch for/do while building this eGPU?

Build a PC for that 2080ti and youll probably see more of an upgrade in game perf.

It’s not a consumer 2080ti inside of it. It’s a striped down version without cooling. Check out a tear down of the aorus 2080ti gaming box. I wish I could just build a PC but I still need my computer for school and the eGPU was the cheaper and more convenient route.
