Depends on your router.

We have a BT Home Hub 3 (I know, no money to change it) It has a USB port on the back which I plugged a USB drive into. You needed to go and map the drive in Windows but then you can use it to share files.

 

DLNA streaming from it works just make sure the drive is FAT32 formatted.
