My 10 year old hp pavilion dv7 3188cl that I've used just yesterday after 2 years now has over heating issues. I disassembled the whole laptop because of a flickering issue with the monitor, got that fixed and cleaned up the heat sync and the vents, brushed off all the dust in there, booted it up, installed win10 and now the 1st Gen i5 in it heats up to 80°-90°c while just playing YouTube videos on browser

sounds like the thermal paste and/or cooler mounting could be messed up, and needs to be re-done. i assume the fan is working?

Were the thermals fine before you took it apart? Best thing to do would be to take it apart again and replace the thermal paste.

I took it apart because it had major heating issues. So much that the laptop would crash after a 15-20 mins of using. Now atleast it doesn't crash and it throttles when it crosses 90°

I really wouldn't recommend trying to disable the GPU, it wouldn't produce much heat unless its under heavier use. I thing the i5 m 430 has integrated graphics, but I don't know if you can use them.

I think you should replace the thermal paste and maybe the fan. Just make sure you do it proper.

That's the tempreture it reaches while just typing a word doc. Also could it be because of gpu usage?

Can I disable the gpu on this laptop since it's only going to be used as a media streaming device or to type in docs or sheets

No, as others here have said, the thermal paste on the cpu/gpu is supposed to be replaced every 2 or so years.  I am betting you have never replaced it. Op, you have gone 100,000 miles without changing the oil...

Alright, I shall change the thermal paste then. Also the screen is flickering, and the keyboard is busted. So I'm thinking of detaching the screen and keyboard and repurpose it as a desktop with external peripherals. So detaching the keyboard ln this laptop would expose the motherboard as it is accessible from the top rather than the bottom. Would it be beneficial to glue or twin tape 2 120mm usb fans as exhausts instead of re-attaching that busted keyboard?

how shall i clean the pipes without a can of compressed air? shall i pull out the gunk with a pin?

First replace your thermal paste and see if that fixes the issue.

I don't know what Flufs was talking about with "vents", but heat-pipes in a laptop are completely sealed off with water and water vapor inside. There is no way there is dust in them unless there was a puncture, which is incredibly unlikely.

You should try testing the connections for the keyboard and display (unplug and plug back in the cables). If that doesn't work, try replacing the screen and the keyboard. It should be cheaper and easier then trying to re-purpose it into a desktop.

In my case i owned an Acer VN7 Nitro - I found a disassembly video on youtube:

pause the video on 05:20 between the heatpipe and the metal vent (which is moving the air) it was sealed by tape, after removing this tape, I could see it was completely clustered up with nasty stuff, if you have anything like that, you could try to take a look. All I'm saying is take a very close look where your airflow gets transported in and out, maybe you have it jammed as I had.

To answer your question more directly, disassemble the entire thing if you can without breaking stuff.:)
