I wasn’t quite sure if these issues were associated with the PSU, it just seemed like the most obvious culprit given I’ve been using it for 5 years and it may have liquid damage.

Not all that bad a PSU really, there are better ones though, and much worse ones...

Still under warranty too if you have had it for 5 years, 10 year warranty...

Still suspect due to water damage however..... So that's a question mark...

Wattage is fine for the system...

Low end MB so that could explain the noise and maybe the ethernet issues.....

Hi everyone,

So I have a computer that I built a little over a week ago. All new parts, except for an old fan and the PSU I took of my previous build. It's an EVGA 650w gold PSU, but a few months back I spilled coffee onto my computer. It didn't work for a day, but I dried it out and cleaned any coffee off with rubbing alcohol and it seemed to work fine after.

Several things I ran into with my new PC: VRM choke whining, a tiny bit of electrical interference in my headphones in games, a noticeable but safe increase in CPU/GPU temperature compared to my friend, and most recently my ethernet has been having connection issues (we have identical new PCs apart from power supplies- he had to buy a new one due to a broken fan). My question was, is it possible that the PSU was damaged and may be causing these issues? I've read that particular combinations of PSUs and motherboards can have issues, and that's the only questionable component of my build. Other than that all I can think of is trying another motherboard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not a good sign really.

Sounds to me like the MB is dyeing slow painful death....

See if you can swap PSUs with your friend to see if the issues get any better...

In the end plan on getting a new MB and PSU however.

One thing you could try is pulling the MB out and stripping the CPU and ram etc... Then take some 91% to 97% Alcohol and clean the crap out of it, let it all dry and put it back together. A clean paint brush for the alcohol and clean towels work well....

That's what I was concerned of. The motherboard and everything else is brand new apart from the power supply, so I don't exactly think that's the issue unless a damaged PSU can damage a motherboard. I don't live by my friend so sadly I'd have to get a new power supply, but is it even possible that a week of playing games could damage a motherboard?

Well once you spill stuff on it.... No matter how new it is... Not a good thing...

It will die, just a matter of time when...

If it was me I would just order a new MB and PSU and call it a day.

And in the future keep liquids away from the PC....

I'm keeping liquids away from the new PC for sure. I'm kind of on a tight budget now after building the computer, so I'm just trying to find the most logical reason for my issues. Every part is new apart from the PSU. Do any of those issues sound like things that could happen from a PSU that was damaged? I always just assumed the PSU would completely die rather than cause issues in the motherboard.

NO.. It's the liquid spill that did the damage.

Spill in a PC and it will die, that is the rule, liquids and electronics don't mix well.

I read it again, you spilled it on the OLD PC and tried to use the old PSU....

Yeah, replace both the MB and PSU, replace the PSU 1st however.....

Then the MB if the issues don't go away, but it does sound like the MB is damaged from the OLD PSU..

I understand what you're saying, but it did work after a day. I went from an i5 with a 970 to an i7 with a 2070 super, so there was probably a substantial increase in power usage in the PSU. I used the computer for at least another month for gaming etc with no problems after drying it out. This new rig is working apart from these issues, and I'm trying to deduce whether or not they're in line with things that could arise from a faulty PSU.

SLOW Painful death...... That's how it normally happens when MB's go.... It's one or two things, then more things start happening then it doesn't work at all in the end... The PSU is a HUGE question mark,,,

All kinds of bad things can happen because of a bad PSU... Slowing frying your MB and GPU is one......

Like I said, new MB and PSU, PSU 1st.... Then MB... Or just order both of them... But get the PSU fast before your GPU has issues and you need to replace that too.

Coil whine is not an issue, other than being annoying.

Not caused by the PSU.

That means absolutely nothing, there will be some variance in the CPU/GPU, even of it's the exact same model.

Not PSU related.

EVGA has about half a billion different 80+ Gold rated 650W PSUs, ranging from absolute garbage to mediocre. Which model is it, and what are your specs?

That's EVGA's lowest end 80+ Gold rated PSU, and was what I described as absolute garbage :P Low end, group regulated unit, making it worse than many budget units. Even though it's not the cause of your issues, you might still want to replace it with something decent.

Oh boy, was afraid of that. Well that’s fine, it’s better that I do this correctly than skimp on parts when I’m investing this much.

I’ll most likely be refunding the motherboard and spending a bit more on a higher end one. In terms of PSUs, is the Corsair CX750M 750W 80 Plus Bronze any better? Unfortunately that’s all my local Best Buy has, and I need to resolve this as fast as possible for school/work.

If you’re absolutely certain that this old one is not going to damage my hardware however, I could always wait and just use amazon.
