Alright, so my system is "relatively" dated, I bought it off a friend to code and learn Linux on. Recently I've gotten more into gaming. I've got an AMD FX6300 (6c/6t) sitting in an Asus M5A78L-M LX Plus with a GTX 750, (2x4) 1600 DDR3 Ram and a 500W 80+ EVGA PSU. I recently bought an SSD to improve performance, cleaned out the whole system, reapplied thermal paste, etc. Then my GTX 750 DIED. Does anyone know what card I should upgrade to that won't bottleneck my performance in 1080p games or light 1440p? Or at this point would it be more effective to save the case, PSU, and SSD and get a new system?

Any feedback is much appreciated.

AMD FX6300

Ouch, you'd be better off getting something newer, than putting money towards that system.

Having said that, if you can get a GTX 1650 cheap, that might sustain you a little longer and could be re-used when you get a newer system

Thank you for the suggestion, I've been considering either or, having friends tell me to completely upgrade or go piece by piece.

Yeah unfortunately the AMD FX platform is *really* dated and *really* dead. Their new Ryzen line is supposed to be fantastic and your money would be better spent by going that route these days.

i wouldnt be surprised if any recent gpu you buy is bottlenecked by the fx, just a rough architecture. if youre into buying used then it wouldnt be too expensive to get an old 2nd-4th gen intel combo, plus an rx570/580, 1060, or 1650 super. an old platform would let you bring over some extra ram which would be nice, if you need to buy 2 more 4gb sticks theyre pretty cheap

as radium_angel said, ryzen is a stellar budget choice but a 3100+mobo+ram will run you at least 200 bucks, an i7 2600k or 3770 with mobo and ram should be uner 100 bucks and would be good too.

Would it be worth getting a new PSU? I mean PSU prices are criminal right now but I'm concerned that getting new parts a 500W wouldn't be able to handle it.

500w is more than plenty. i ran my oced 9700k and 1080ti on 550w without any issues. i wouldnt do that on a unit like the cheaper evgas but it should be fine with low end parts. even with a 980ti or some other old powerhouse youd be fine

3rd gen will be the best bang for the buck for the near future. the 3100 is still a pretty new part and they likely wont have a 4100 for a while. get that with either a cheap b450 or an a320/a520 and some 3200mhz ram for 50 bucks and that would be a solid choice.

If you can wait, wait, but the 3rd gen is very nice (and I say this as someone who likes systems that run Xeons exclusively) and you will be quite happy with 3rd gen.
