HDD or SSD?

Hey everyone , im gonna buy a Barracuda 1TB HDD and i wonder if i can download on the hard drive ? or should i purchase an ssd?

I wanna download games to stream on and stuff . Do i need necesseraly an ssd to do that or could i stock the games and everything on the HDD

You don’t need an SSD, no. Harddrives work just fine, they are just slower.

It will not affect FPS. Using a hard drive your load times will be a bit longer, but it won’t affect FPS.

it will lag for some games, stuff arent loading fast enough

I have never seen a hard drive case in game issues, the world is loaded into RAM as you move through it. I suppose depending on the system and which game, yea it’s possible. But that would be more of a lack of RAM issue then a HDD issue.

and by a bit longer it honestly isnt that bad, im currently running modern warfare from a hdd and it still loads into matches before most other people

the only game i have seen that has a huge problem with being on a hdd is black desert online

obviously havent played black desert online, going from hdd to ssd gives like 150% - 200% the fps of it being on a hdd, is the only game i have played though that had issues, tbh its not worth the extra money, like 1tb ssd or 3tb hdd, thats a lot more games

For the time being, there's no performance penalty in gaming from an HDD. Things will just take longer to load, but once your in, it's all the same.

 

However, that's mostly the case because games are designed to load assets into RAM precisely because storage was typically slow. Even SATA SSDs with ~600MB/s transfer speeds aren't fast enough to just pull assets from storage as needed. PCIe 4.0 NVMe is pretty close, though, which is why the new console generation is leveraging that now.

 

As more games come out for the next gen consoles, and especially games that are for both PC and console, I'd expect devs to start leveraging fast storage on PC as well. We're still a ways off from that, though.
