Hello,

I have recently begun looking at the performance of my pc build as I am interested in purchasing a new CPU (i7-7900k). However, I found that in any game that I boot up, my CPU usage is anywhere between 80% to 100% while my GPU usage floats around 10%. I have tried to configure some settings through "edit power plan" to make sure I am under "Performance power option" but to no avail. Further, I have changed some GPU settings through the Nvidia Control Panel but that also hasn't increased GPU usage or decreased CPU usage. Below is my system build as well as games that I play on a daily basis. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

PC Build:

CPU: i5 8400

GPU: RTX 2070 Super

RAM: G Skill DDR4 2133 mhz

MB: MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Plus

PSU: EVGA Supernova Gold 650w

Games I experience HIGH CPU usage:

Rainbow Six Siege

COD: Modern Warfare/Warzone

Overwatch

Hyperscape

Red Dead Redemption 2

yes, your cpu is bottlenecking your gpu.

the 7900k doesn't exist. if you mean 9700k, I wouldn't recommend it. it's on a dead platform with no upgrade options.

i'd look at the 10600k if you want to stick with intel

i'd look at ryzen 5 3600 as well if you want to save some money for almost the same performance

i remeber very similar case a month ago.

this was the fix:

High Precision Event Timer (HPET) is a hardware timer that is needed by Windows OS for some Multimedia related tasks. When enabled, this timer may cause low GPU usage and huge performance loss in games. You have to check your computer BIOS to see if this timer is supported by your system or is enabled by default or not. You can disable HPET to gain performance in games and also have your GPU to run to its maximum performance
. To disable it HPET in Windows, Go to command prompt and type in the following command. bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock
To enable HPET again, use the following command in the command prompt. bcdedit /set useplatformclock true Note: If you are facing instability issues with Windows and other software after disabling HPET, then you might want to turn it ON again when you are not gaming.

Edit: make sure to disable it in device manager too.

+ yes the 8400 is pretty big bottleneck. but nowhere that big. diable the HPET in bios, command prompt and in device manager and try again
