Hi all, I'll get down to the point.

I have a ryzen 2700x, b450 tomahawk, and 2 8gb ddr4 2666 ram sticks (I think they are gskills ripjaws). Yes, ik it's slow ram, I built on a budget.

In my bios, that's a setting that says something like "ram try me". I set that to 3200 and I think 16-18-18 (I can get exact numbers if needed). Is that the same as actual 3200mhz ram?

Anyhow, I need more ram (turns out skylines + chrome isn't a good combo ram wise). More recently, I've heard fast ram is super important for ryzen.

Just 1 8gb 2666 stick is only $25 -30 or so... But if I upgraded all my ram and got another 8gb stick to 3600mhz, it would be more like $130. Also rgb comes with that price point, and we all know how rgb is the only real thing that matters lol.

Is it worth it to get faster ram and get rid of my old 2666 ram, or is it a negligible difference not work $100+?

Ik Linus has a video for 3rd gen, but not 2nd gen ryzen - ram proformance.

Thanks a ton in advance!

If you get another 3600 stick. They'll both clock at 2666 either way, and mix and matching sticks isn't guaranteed to work.

They maybe iffy with a lot of things like xmp/docp.

You could either get a new 2x8 3200cl16 kit or a 3600 cl16 kit (though zen +'s imc probably will struggle a lot with 3600.) Or just get another stick that's rated for 2666 and check how far you can go with a manual overclock.

Yeah that is what I am stuck on. Is it worth $100 for the extra ghz, or am I better off just getting more 2666 (I need 25gb, so either I swap all of it out for $130, or I get another 2666 8gb stick for $30 or so)? And also, when I set the "ram try me!" setting to 3200, is that as if I had real 3200 ram?

If it was running at 3200 and it was stable then yes.

You could either get a new kit.

Or get a 2666 stick and check how far you can go with it.

The performance difference won't be worth paying the extra though.
