Replacement DVD Burner

Go to solution Solved by FizzyFantom,

So I'm trying to fix someones computer that needs a new dvd burner but the problem i have ran into is that its an hp computer that uses an external eject button that connects through a 2 wire plug in the back of the drive. So I was wondering if anyone knew of a drive that would be have that setup. As it is now if i replace it with a normal drive there will be no usable eject on the front of the computer so it would have to all be software so that sounds like a bad idea to me.

If i can't find a drive then I can just mod one to replace it and if it was my computer I would do that with out hesitating.

random info if people want it

HP Pavilion Slimline s5220f

the drive is an hp DH-16AAL (maybe DH-16AAL ej)

its a normal size internal sata dvd burner with that extra 2 pin plug in the back for what hp calls an external eject feature

Eww, sounds really nasty. Since that isn't a standard I would just mod something. You might be able to remove the drive door and mount the new drive a little further forward. Other than that not much I can suggest.

Edit: you can buy replacement drives of the same type, or if you feel adventurous you could try to wire that button up to a new DVD drive. You would only need to find the two points on the board where the button on the drive connects to, but this would require you to take apart your nice new drive and solder wires on.

hmmm that is the first time i have seen that one, 35.50$ shipped seems like a lot for a dvd burner but seeing as most I have been seeing are 60+ for that drive refurbished it doesn't seem that bad.

guess i should take back the drive i bought and order that. It just sucks if i get it and still have to mod it if it doesn't work. I would have no problem modding it if need be just didn't want to since its not my computer.

If anyone knows of a cheaper drive that has this let me know.

Well if its an old computer just do without the external eject/open button, leave it there though. Most OS's you just have to right click the CD/DVD drive and select Eject to open it, seems a viable solution or have them pay up the nozzle for a proper drive, that's what you get when you go proprietary.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.
