I have Asus Crosshair Hero VIII MoBo and since I have some minor issues I want to flash the BIOS too latest version but I'm so scared and anxious because I live in a place where power outlet failures are common in these days when is thundering and the weather here for days sucks.

My friend who is PC Technician told me that this board can not be flashed wrong way I didn't quite understand he told me that the bios has some first code written bla bla haven't understand him right but I understood that even if it fails, that damage to the chip is impossible, and with eprom programmer all ca be set just like it was.

Can anyone confrm me that?

And what option Crash Free Bios 3 means to me?

I've been looking under instructions for asus motherboard and it's written that I need to rename some file,I suppose bios file to be able to flash.

How long the process takes, and I'd be more then happy if someone could send me link to procedure to flash BIOS for particular this model.

Please do not take offence for my apparent confusion or rudeness,it's not intent me to be like that,it's just my BPD,be nice to me,and I'll return twice better,be rude and usually I get easly pissed of...I'll try to help anyone here,as long as it's something I dealt with, and even if you think I'm rude or not polite, forgive me,  it's not me it's my BPD.

Thanks for understanding.

In theory if a bios flash fails and the bios becomes corrupted, all you need to do is a cmos to bring it back.

No, a bricked BIOS is much more serious than a CMOS reset. If you don't have Dual-BIOS or BIOS-flashback, then you're pretty much screwed.

However the Crosshair Hero VIII does have USB flashback so even if you manage to screw up the flashing, you can still flash the BIOS without being able to get into the BIOS.

so basically I can reflash corrupted BIOS via BIOS fb button?

I'm safe in every way?

In case newest BIOS makes some issues I can revert to old one?

All else fails on a bad bios flash, Asus motherboard disk comes with a bios recovery option.

You boot from the disk to recover.

Asus has more recovery options than other manufacturers.

From all the Asus boards I've had through the years, I've only had to recover 1 or 2 boards from a bad flash.

Your chances of a bad bios update are pretty slim.

Right. You unplug all drives and install the CD into the DVD reader and it'll post from it.

However, you're over thinking all this.

Procedure for update??  No problem.

Enter bios and set all defaults.

Shut the rig completely down.

Clear the cmos via jumper.

Install Flash drive with bios you wish to update.

Start Rig

Enter Bios

Update bios

restart rig when prompted or let it by itself.

Enter bios and set all defaults

restart and enter bios again.

Set up your bios and restart enter windows.

Enjoy.

ooh okay thx,yep just watched the video how some guy did it,but how about this:

Before running the USB BIOS Flashback tool, please rename the BIOS file(C8H.CAP)using BIOSRenamer."
Do I need to do that step?

Only if the flash doesn't work with the current file name. I have never renamed a file that I can recall. As long as it ends in .cap, it usually updates fine.

You put just the bios firmware file on the flash drive. Not the folder it comes in btw.

hmm okay.but what is the purpoe of BIOSRenamer file?

Why does it matter if the .cap file is in folder or not?

It's just easier with a blank drive and just the bios file. You put it in, the bios will see the file straight away without you having to open folders. The folder doesn't matter, I'm just making it super easy for you.

Ok so the bios updater won't open a file that doesn't end in cap because it doesn't have the ability to read any other file extension. That is all.

so I need to copy both files to usb en drive not just .cap and no need to rename anything?

really? can you link to this feature? It's a bit strange to me how you would be able to POST from a disk device if the BIOS is bricked.

nvm found it https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1012219/

Good find.

Has been a feature of Asus for many years. And it's a good one too.

I recovered specifically the Asus M3A motherboard quite some years ago. Worked like a charm actually.

Who'd thought that old Optical drive could save your ass someday ? :P
