Setting up minecraft server

Whenever I add a server to java minecraft the IP adress is letters but how does that work.  I would like to set up a server, but I do not want to have to give out my IP adress to people.  How would I go about this.

You can't run a server without giving out that server's ip, whether directly or indirectly.
