Hey guys, so I’ll start with my pc is about 10 years oldish

i7 4770k

Gtx 770 2g

32g ram

Msi z97-g55 sli

I’ve started getting blue screen of death lately. I reinstalled Windows 10 and blue screen happened maybe few weeks later. At the time I had 16g of ram so upgraded to 32g. Well now My pc is pausing a few seconds while I’m playing games. Haven’t had the ram in long enough to see if that has stopped the blue screen. Now I’m thinking I need to upgrade my gpu which I want to anyhow to stop the pausing. Which I think is going bad.

So with that being said....what gpu should I get and will that fix the pausing problem?

I was thinking about the gtx 1660 super 6g

Is the OS installed on a hard drive? I suspect that the drive might be going bad. What does SMART say?

That was the next step I was going to check. The OS is on my evo 250g ssd. If it is going bad, then I can boot from my m.2 1t ssd. which I may just go ahead and do that.

I had your symptoms with a mechanical drive, had to fresh install windows any couple of weeks cause of bad sectors. Windows kept corrupting itself.

That might not be your case tho

Gotcha. Thank you! When I get home I’ll see what SMART says. Tell you the truth, I hope it’s that.

I get you, a drive is cheaper than a gpu, but even old systems shouldn't bsod. I'm on a very similar build of yours and don't have such issues.

Usually when a game freezes it's because it's either waiting for the cpu or waiting on an I/O operation. If the gpu struggles usually you'll experience framedrops, straight up locks shouldn't occur to my knowledge.

Does it freeze on all games? Have you tried running a gpu benchmark?

Does the bsod occur randomly or only when gaming? If it happens again, can you note down the error code?

Might want to give memtest a try as well. 2 full passes should be enough. Just let it run overnight and see how it goes.
