Hi there dear LTT community!

As you do, during this... speciel time... we have on our hands, you pick up some new hobbies, some new things to do. For me, lately, it's been putting old systems and parts to good use. I won't bore ya'll with details, and I'll just be doing a copy/paste from my post on reddit, but I am desperate for feedback of any kind and anywhere! So here's to hoping that some of you will lend me some of your expertise, as I am still on the novice level.

Could use some feedback on the potential of this machine, or if there could be any potential issues of any sorts. I get that it won't be a beast, far from it even, but it's aimed at becoming a portable CSGO/Valorant/LoL machine that should be able to do at least 1080p low-medium @ 60 fps minimum or there about. Potentially even GTA V. No AAA titles.

Ga-G31M-ES2C | Already owned and currently used as browsing maching with E5200
Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 3.4 OC (at least that was the plan, not yet tested or tried) | Used $15
2x4GB HyperX Fury DDR2 @ 800 - C5 | found used including shipping for $5
EVGA 650 Ti Blowerstyle | Bid going right now for $15
PSU XXX 80+ Bronze | $30 ? Recommendations?
Gonna find some 120GB SSD for boot drive and a 1TB HDD. | Already owned and available.
And I'm gonna put that into a Q300L with some Arctic P12 fans to create positive airflow. So about $50 for the case and a 5 pack of P12 only costs about $20, splitting that up into 3 gives us $12.

So overall we're looking at me spending (case excluded, as that can be kept for future use):Seventy-seven dollars | $77

I'm trying to find a used PSU that I dare use. So far only found a VS550 (garbage I hear) and a Inter-Tech Energon "Gaming PSU" that looks like it'll burn my apartment down within 2 hours of use, so pass. Although, somebody has any personal experience with the Energon PSU? Or know of a cheap reliable PSU @ 550W. Also looking at used cases to save money there, otherwise I'll also be forced to buy new here aswell.

Would love some feedback!

Btw, if you have any alternative to a better/cheaper/superior case, please let me know!

Just a quick edit: I am from Scandinavia, so all NewEgg/Amazon/eBay sales/deals are off my radar sadly, due to shipping and import tax costs.

Wishing you all a great day
Cuirl

darn a quad core cpu that is equivalent to a single core performance of recent chips

gonna be a good PC

but probably still run CSGO well tho

enjoy your potato :D

Hey, it's Moonzy again. Somehow always here to lend a hand when I need one.

Yeah, the bus speed of the Q9400 is a bit lackluster and the cache could have been better. But from what I could gather, it seemed to have decent OC capabilities. No point in trying to get a LGA775 chip to work in 2020? Time to move up to 1155 as the minimum chip for super low budget gamers?

But thank you, I do enjoy the versatility of potatoes!

didnt say that lol

i have a Q8300 lying around, i used it as a browsing machine but not gaming so idk how would it do in that regard

but here's something to reference i guess

Spoiler

CPU: Core 2 Quad Q8300
RAM: 6GB (DDR2 2x2GB + 2x1GB)
GPU: Asus Strix GTX 1070 + GTX970
Storage: 120GB SSD

Pardon me, horrible phrasing, obviously it'll work. Question is if it'll work for the desired tasks at hand. Low demanding esport titles. It seemed your Q8300 did pretty good.

While it seemed the bottleneck is there, the 1% lows didn't seem THAT bad. At least considering what the system will have cost to build anyways. Which seems a argument for buying a 600W Bronze+ PSU to avoid dips in the voltages. Which, by my understanding, can be a major contributing factor to CPU throttle. Did I misunderstand something here?

Pardon my novice questions and thanks for using your time reading and answering my post.

a good psu is needed for sure

but afaik if the voltage dips below the threshold, you'll most likely BSOD, or at least soft crash, not throttle lol

idk, im not too into cpu OC-ing and voltage tweaking myself
