I recently updated to a Ryzen 5 3600X system with an RTX 2080 Super in an SFX chasis. I have a 600W PSU which meets the estimated 450W requirements at load, however the system shuts down when playing games for an extended period of time (Rainbow 6 Siege). I haven't been able to lock down the exact issue and if anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them!

Troubleshooting done so far:

  • The issue does not occur when running the R6 benchmark and does not occur in the same time interval.
  • There is no artifacting so it does not appear to be GPU.
  • The temps on drives, GPU, and CPU are all fine based on MSI Afterburner.
  • All drivers are up to date.
  • I have tried using a Corsair HX1000i and the same issue persists so it doesn't appear to be PSU related.
  • I used a GTX 980 to test out the issue was GPU; while the system ran longer than with the 2080, it still shut down at some point.
  • When I under volt the 2080 the system is able to run stabilely most of the time, but sometimes it does still shut down.

My theory:

I saw a Gamers Nexus motherboard breakdown that spoke about Mini Itx boards placing capacitors or other components too close to the CPU socket or where the stock cooler may be and those designs causing issues. As I am using the stock AMD cooler, the motherboard may be overheating and tripping to save itself. The problem with this is I placed a fan in the area to see if there was any change and there was not.

Long term I intend to build a custom loop in this system, but I would like to know the parts and pairing is good before I spend the time and effort on it.

Thanks for any help or pointers you can give me

I would lean towards the mobo. What board are you using? And have you by any chance tried changing the ram?

I don't have any ram to swap in unfortunately. I am using an Aorus B450 itx. I would agree that it's mobo, the usb devices begin running into issues before a crash. For the time being I under clocked the gpu until I can build in a custom loop.

I sadly have not seen that video from Gamers Nexus but mobo designers should know cooler dimantions for the ones included with cpus, DURING the mobo development. So I find this very strange.

And liquid cooling removes most of the heat entering the air from the gpu. But at the same time you lose the airflow of the stock cpu cooler blowing air down around the cpu socket area on the mobo.

I can't reatch Gigabytes website atm but I think this board should support the 16 core monster. So the power draw from 3600X should be more then fine.

I do think that something in the system is not working as intended. My primary guess is the mobo, but in my experience ram problems / instability can act very weird. So I'm also thinking there is a chance of something going on there.

If you have sticks big enough that you can game on one you could try removing one stick and game for a bit. And if it is still the same just putt it back and remove the other one.

Have you tried playing any other games?
