After a couple hours of heavy load my computer has been oddly crashing in a way i havent seen before. Upon inspection my PSU is so hot to the touch i burnt myself this morning and is accompanied by a although very faint smell of burning plastic coming from it.

So how hot are PSUs supposed to run?

So im assuming this isnt normal any brands i should go for when replacing my PSU?

Edit im running a i5 3750k CPU 780ti with 6 case fans and a Corsair h55. Is 600-700 watts about right for that?

Wattage wise you should be fine, your rig needs something like 550-600W maximum. On the other hand that PSU... I have never heard of that brand and it is not even 80+ certified, which is not making it any better. Check to see if the PSU fan is actually spinning.

PS: My PSU has never been even warm to the touch, perhaps it is around 25-30C (the same as my ambient temp), however it is a 1000W unit and it is 80+ Bronze.

Its not even 80+, you cheaped out and due to that you powersupply could explode at any moment potentially ending everything in or pc or anything connected to your mains electricity grid in your house. Very bad move, i recommend you get a psu from a god brand like corsair, xfx, seasonic asap and make sure it is at least 80+ bronze AT LEAST, that little icon will save you a bloody ton of money. You are currently running on very thin ice.

Well it did say the average psu temp was 45oc which is very high.

It is more than enough to run this system. When you mean by crash, does the whole computer freeze/shutdown? I would try getting a case fan and blowing it into the power supply holes to make sure that if it is overheating that is causing it to crash.

A "750w" unit that's only £17.58 with only one 6 pin PEG connector? Well, that's an immediate indicator that the PSU is trash and most likely isn't capable of outputting half of what it is rated safely. Poor voltage regulations and ripples suppression can cause your system to behave erratically, as well as can have a long term effect on the life span of your components. I would suggest investing £50 or so for a proper quality 550w unit for your system.
