Hello everyone.

I have problems with chrome and firefox. They both make my nvidia drivers crash and then entire OS. I've tried multiple driver versions both beta and WHQL but nothing works. They usually crash at a new tab or a youtube video. I've disabled gpu accerelation and anything with GPUs but they still crash (plus without the gpu chrome is so slow).

Also, Office 13 likes to crash my nvidia drivers and freeze PC. I disabled hardware acceleration, and it works so far.

When the drivers crash or the OS, my computer freezes and my mouse disconnects (the LED turns off) but my keyboard does not (both connected via USB). It was happening both on my previous W7 and now on W8. If there's no cure for it, could you recommend me which nvidia drivers did not support browsers or which chrome version introducted gpu acceleration, so I could downgrade the drivers.

my specs just in case:

e8200 2.66@3.2

gts450 1gb

ddr2 4gb

dfi p35 blood iron

500w OCZ psu

Note: I have some weird problem with my mobo, causing to crash entire PC when I unplug the S/PDIF port. I was told it might be something my my sound chip on the mobo. Does it have any relevance to this crashes? It worked just fine for few years as long as the cable is plugged in.

Update: downgraded chrome to version 26 and nvidia to 301 but its still crashing. Not as often but still. The drivers crash like 5 times and only after some time they finally freeze everything. Installed nTune to manually increase fans speed (just in case) but it crashes right after I start the program.

I have no idea what to do.

(I copied it from 'software' section since no one answered me there yet)

Could be the PSU I have a similar issue with my computer, read my post here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/12207-coil-buzz-grey-screen-of-death-and-general-un-happiness-i/

If you take out the GPU does the computer still crash? Do you have another system to test the GPU and or another power supply.

try using your friend's GPU and try to use your GPU on your friend's computer.

By the way have you tried using the driver you graphic card comes with?

Thanks for the advices but I'm not sure if its the gpu or psu. When I play games it does not happen, everything works just fine. The only thing that crashes my pc are browsers so far. I don't have really anyone who could help me test either of the components.

It would be so much easier if the crashes were regular, like everytime I open the browser it crashes, but they are not. I've noticed that now when I'm using Flashplayer 10.3 and Firefox it doesnt crash (so far).

I think I still have warranty on both PSU and GPU, because they are the newest parts in my system.

Again, thanks for ideas.

I recommend

  • running driver sweeper and install only up to date drivers (no beta and no old ones)
  • check your thermal paste if its as old as you describe

recently fix a client pc with similar problems what I did was clean it, unplug all PSU cables

and put them back were they were (with some cable management) and change the thermal

paste and drivers and it started to work like normal. Try getting a working GPU from eBay

around $5-$10 so you could troubleshoot better.

I have finally fixed it. Turned out it was Windows 8 fault. Reinstalled my old W7, installed drivers v301 and everything works. I've noticed a couple of errors in event viewer back on w8. Maybe it has some issues with the components I have. Other that that thread can be closed.
