Ive had a pc w/ an asus rog hero board w/ a intel 6700 cpu and a 980ti geforce graphics card for years. everything i play i can run on ultra settings and i only play at 1080 resolution. I was thinking of upgrading my Graphics card but a 2080ti is quite steep for me at this point would i benefit significantly from a 2080? Should i keep my current card and upgrade my board/cpu first? I have had issues w/ my pc kind of running hot for awhile now and it seems to be related to my CPU from my local PC shops techs which i tend to trust.

Well, the 2080 would most definitely be a drastic improvement, but that doesn't mean you necessarily need it. Generally speaking, if you're happy with your performance, there's no reason to upgrade unless you just find some kind of once in a lifetime dream sale.

Running hot can be fixed by simply getting a better air cooler and/or more/better case fans, both of which would be a lot cheaper than a new GPU, which honestly probably doesn't have much to do with the heat, unless you've just got really bad air flow in your case.

For CPU or GPU, you're at a really bad time in the cycle for an upgrade. Both will see significant new hardware before the end of the year. AMDs Zen 3 is launching as well as new graphics from both AMD and Nvidia. Even if you don't jump on the new stuff, it will push current gen prices down. Best to just stick with what you have for now and wait and see what the fall brings. You can jump on the cooling now, as that will still be applicable if you upgrade later, and probably even more important then.

If you do want to upgrade you should wait for big Navi or 3000 series gpus.

Don't. Your card is still strong enough to last another few months so that you can grab the 3000 series. Buying a top tier card right now makes absolutely no sense.
