AI platform desktop build

Hi Linus,

during this covid 19 epidemic I have been taking the time to explore my passion in the tech world once again, I have recently gotten into IBM's Watson AI platform to build up on job skills and began to look into nvidia's ai platform technology as well. I was debating on building an AI desktop to further push my DIY build skills when I thought it might be best to ask an experts opinion regarding this technology. My question relates to CPU platforms and which may be more ideal for Deep learning ai platforms. I was thinking AMD ryzen based upon the technologies cost as well as its performance in gaming as AI software seems to adhere to this realm better i.e. graphic card processors seem to coincide closer to ai technology then any other. Let me know if you have any thoughts or perhaps old videos that may assist on this platform so I may further explore this project with better guidance.

I'm not actually familiar with this work load. So I don't know if ryzen or intel will perform better. If it's more a multi threaded task them ryzen will most likely pull ahead. What I can recommend though is Waiting. If you absolutely don't need a rig now then wait for zen 3 and check what it can offer.

I'm not sure what your goal is here. If you want to do machine learning at home it's basically exclusive to GPUs and ASICs and the CPU doesn't matter much. You can understand how it works on any PC but depending on what you are doing it might be best to train the models in the cloud with a service from someone like Amazon, Microsoft, or Google. You pay hourly and can have access to Tesla GPUs that cost more than your first car. If you are looking for simple things like OpenCV or deepfakes than any standard Nvidia GPU will work. The more powerful the card the faster it will be. Nvidia also sells Tegra dev kits if you are looking more for embedded machine learning.

CPU doesn't really matter that much when it comes to training models and whatnot. A celeron with 32gb of ram and any nvidia GPU should get you started quickly. If you're not sure if you really want to pull the trigger on that kind of thing, it's worth to take a look into Google's colab or kaggle notebooks, those are free and provide you with a pretty reasonable GPU (P100 or T4 depending on your luck).
