I just upgraded to Gigabit Speeds and my Wifi gets no where near that. My main PC is hard wired so i am getting full gigabit there but my wifi is not even touching 200mbps. I live in an apartment building so i understand the channels are congested. What can i do to improve my wifi. I want atleast 500mbps over wifi. My router is Tp-Link Archer A9 1900.

that'll pretty much never happen especially in a congested area like an apartment. I'd suggest you just plug it in if you happen to actually find a source that seeds more than 200mbps. otherwise the majority of the internet isn't seeding you that speed anyway

Gigabit over WiFi is nearly impossible with consumer grade gear for now - we're waiting for WiFi 6 to be ratified and released to the general public first, which will require both a WiFi 6 router and the antenna/chipset in all your devices to be upgraded as well. The average "best" speeds I get on modern devices in my home is around 450-550mbps over the 5GHz network when connected in the same room as the modem/router itself.

What are you testing the WiFi from though? As emosun said, you'll never get full speed on wifi, but to get a higher speed both ends of the wifi connection need to support it.

Try using the "iperf" tool (run the server side on your wired PC, and the client side on whatever wireless device you are using) to test throughput. If it's still 200mbps with the wireless device in the same room as the router, then that device may well be at fault.

i've tested multiple devices next to my router and still in the 200s. how did you get it that high?

Well, a phone is going to be limited, very few actually have multiple antennas/bonded channels.
Laptop will also depend on antennas, but most have enough - it's more down to the WiFi card installed. You should be able to see which one it is in Windows Device Manager?

Both your devices and your router have to play nicely together in order to achieve top end speeds. I'm using a modem/router combo unit alongside a Netgear R7000 running custom firmware. I've been a bit lazy, so connecting via 5GHz over the Netgear is limited to around 250-350mbps, while connecting to the 5GHz of my modem/router combo potato nets me between 450-550mbps using my OnePlus 5T phone and/or iPad Mini 5. That being said, our older Chromebook and my Roku streaming media player are both limited to under 150mbps in speeds as they just don't have a powerful enough WiFi chipset in them.

Seems like 200mbps is about right then. Your CPU may also be a limiting factor, along with about 1001 other variables. It doesn't seem like there is anything really wrong. Maybe grab a WiFi Analyser app on the laptop or phone, and check which channels might be less busy - might gain you a few mbps. But you aren't going to get 1000mbps from a card you know peaks at "433".

Basically, you'd need a desktop PC with a high-end WiFi card to achieve it.

What band are you connecting to from the laptop? 2.4GHz, or 5GHz? 5 might have a higher bandwidth, but struggles with walls and distance.

Only other suggestions are making sure the router is up off the floor, and not within 3-6ft of a mirror or other large metal object.
