What do you mean by that? If somebody makes an item that will work with proprietary rgb they will make it not work and make it only work with their hub?

He's just being cynical with no real basis. The EK-AIO is in fact compatible with 5 V addressable RGB headers from Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, and Asrock. For example, if you don't mind it being the same as your other LED strip, you could just use a cheap splitter:

https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-d-rgb-6-way-splitter-cable

Some cheaper controllers that should work too:

https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/coolers/rgb-accessories/argb-led-controller/

Anything that is 5V a(or d)RGB and is Asus Aura, MSI Mystic Light, Gigabyte Fusion comptaible is fine

My understanding of the way manufactures are running proprietary rgb at the moment is “not if the manufacturer can help it and if you do find one they’ll ‘fix’ it”

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Yup.  Perhaps they are developing some inter compatibility.  @For Science! may know more about the specifics of what is going on currently than I do.  When RGB started there was a standard.  Developed by the people that make the actual lights.  Who still do. The companies deliberately diverged from it.  Breaking it where possible.  Perhaps they are coming together again.
