Recently I picked up a fully operating dell r200 server with a xeon3220 and 4gb of ddr2 for 20$. initial plans was to host a small website, one that would possibly see 3-4 users simultaneously. The need for a transcoding server just arose and i dont believe it has the balls to transcode x8 1440p@25fps h.264 streams to 720p@5fps mjpeg for my mobile viewing pleasure. The biggest cpu i believe i can cram in to the lga775 socket is a xeon3380 or xeon3370 along with 8 or 16gb of ram, not sure what it will support. So i guess my question is can it host the website and transcode. or should i move on to a slightly newer server.

WHat are you using for transcoding? I don't the the fast cpus(basically a core 2 quad) will do that, but there cheap enough to just try. Decoding 1440p alone takes a good amount of cpu power.

SOmething like a dual 1366 server is pretty cheap(also you in the bay area I got a extra if you want it)

You could also pretranscode the footage, so you don't have to transcode on the fl.

either vlc or handbrake. in either a linux or xp environment. most likely linux being its a light OS. a quick search shows no xeon3380 processors on ebay. 4cores4threads@3.16ghz. i wonder if a roughly gtx660 gpu could handle part of the load.

You cn use. 660 of rencoding and decoding with nvenc and nvdec.

Ye,  modem linux distro like debian 10 or centos 8 is a good pick here. Stay away form xp.
