Budget (including currency): $1800CAN (although that seems to have gone out the window)

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: CIV6 at 4K

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): no need for any other peripherals. while I only intend to play Civ6 at the moment I want to give myself some room to play other games in the future. This is a large investment for me and I'd like it to last a while.

Hey All,

I've watched build logs and tech reviews (especially LTT) for the past five years and now I'm super excited to be building my very own. However, that is easier said then done and choosing the parts while staying within budget has just about driven me crazy so I've come for advice. Bearing in my that I need a SFF build because my apartment is tiny, and I'd ideally like to keep my current case selection if for no other reason then because the handle is cool. Now, questions:

  1. Do I need the Noctua? It's hard to find in Canada and I'm worried it might be overkill for an I5, then again its in a small case so I know cooling, especially quiet cooling will always be a struggle...
  2. Is there any way to have off a couple hundred dollars without compromising build quality and performance? I know the motherboard is pricey but from what I understand its one of the few that can take full advantage of the front USB 3.1 gen 2 port on the TU 150 mini.
  3. any general incompatibilities that I should be aware of? I know the noctua cooler needs low profile ram and I've got that covered but I'm sure I missed something.

Any other advice is also greatly appreciated.

@SomethingSomewhatClever I think, at this time, AMD Ryzen should be a no brainer??

The Ryzen 5 series would be suitable for your budget and don't forget the future upgradibility you've got with AMD. According to me, at lower and mid-high range, AMD has no competition, unless Intel does something groundbreaking that is ;)

You're probably right, I guess I was thinking that Civ6 depends on the CPU for turn times and intel has the edge but is it worth the cost?

thanks for taking the time to revamp my list! IDK if US pricing is just that different or what but I'll probably have to ditch the 2080 super as its $1,400 here in maple syrup land. our money, while colorful, does not have as much buying power.

good catch! I tough it was compatible but i'll have to double check. I'll probably be going with a 600W gold anyways

The one you chose will fit (Corsair SF) but there have been some recall issues with that unit. It is a good psu though if you manage to get one of the unaffected ones.

You have to redo your build. You made it on PCPartPicker with the US pricing, so it's not relevant.

As others have said, you're better off going Ryzen at the moment. The 10600k is a pretty solid processor as well though. Depends what your goals are.

I'd definitely get a cooler, however there are lots of good cheaper coolers; Scythe makes quite a few.

that's fair. judging by the feedback on here (awesome community btw) i went with an AMD build. Which I think fits the bill. I'll post it here since i'm not sure if i'm allowed to post a second a second topic so soon.

Not bad, as long as you're ok with having a processor that will be replaced by something newer in a couple of months.

I'd also get a cheap, used graphics card, and buy a new 3000 series card when it comes out.

@SomethingSomewhatClever Damn bro, that's a good jump from a 6C/6T to a 8C/16T processor! That would be more than enough for CIV6 because they are more CPU intensive, and having more cores and threads only helps.

I'll be honest with you and recommend you to go for other brands for motherboard rather than Gigabyte.. Its from my personal experience that they are a pain to overclock on....

ASUS/MSI have way better bios in terms of overclocking.

IT's not that Gigabyte mobos aren't good, but just they are just messing the CPU overclocking settings recently... But if you're going to stay on stock settings, go for it.

hey man thx for taking the time to build me a PC, I don't know how you guys do it so off the cuff. While its a good set-up I don't think it would be a good setup for me. A SFF case is a must since I'll already be gaming on the kitchen table so I don't even want to try and convince my gf about having a mid-tower, the miniITX was hard enough lol! In addition my latest AMD-focused build (i know i changed my build on you lol) lets me squeeze both a 3700x and a 2060 Super out of my budget.

Ah, you're switching from a B550 to a B450, that is why the price is lower? (If you're following the AMD build list)

I think if you're not someone who want "Balls to the walls" top tier build, get a B450 like the one you chose, since you'll technically still be able to upgrade to all newer chips and their prices will also drop due to launch of new hardware :)
