I bought this computer in September of 2019 and I have been using it ever since without any worries/problems but, yesterday while I was playing GTA V with a friend the computer ended up shutting down on his own which I found quite weird because it never happened before. After rebooting the computer I went and checked the temperature of the CPU and it was at a whopping 80ºC/176ºF which is not normal at all. FYI I never checked before the temperature regularly so i'm not sure if it is a recurring issue.

My CPU is a i7-8700 and the cooler unfortunately is the stock intel cooler that comes with it, which I think is the problem and because of that I ordered a Hyper 212 from Cooler Master which i'm hoping will fix the problem.

What do you guys think? help

Thats completely safe. CPUs are rated to go into the 90s under load before thermal thottling or anything bad happening.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Yes but when I play something like Assassins Creed Origins it goes above 90s which I don't find safe

Then it is a good thing you got the other cooler. Your temps should be much lower with the new one.

I'm trying not to play any games at the moment just to be safe about it, but really hoping the cooler helps

It definitely will. But it should be safe to play until then especially if you turn down the settings and frames to keep the temps low. CPUs are able to be in the 90s as long as it isn't like that 24/7. For short amounts of time it is perfectly safe.

I might try and play some games then, the next problem comes when the cooler arrives because i have never installed a cooler before, apart from the stock one

There are tons of videos on how to do it with your exact cooler and socket. Installing coolers is not too hard, you should be perfectly fine.

80C is normal for stock cooler. 212 will help, though I hope its Black Edition and not Evo. You should have looked bit further before buying that. Evo has been dropped from its position as budget king years ago.

Have you looked at BIOS settings? Like what options you can control? If you have option to enable/disable Multi-core Enchantment, I suggest disabling it.
